Itinerary & tour details
Welcome to Zhangjiajie! Upon arrival at Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport, Zhangjiajie Railway Station, or Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, meet your driver for a private transfer to your hotel. Pickup is available from designated locations in the Yongding District and Wulingyuan area, according to your booking arrangements. If you prefer, you may also travel independently to the agreed meeting point.
To ensure a smooth arrival, share your flight or train number, arrival time, and hotel details in advance. Your driver will confirm the meeting location and pickup arrangements before your journey. The included transfer covers transportation to your hotel; additional sightseeing transfers should be confirmed separately.
Hotel Check-in and Free Time
After arriving at your hotel, complete check-in and take some time to rest after your journey. Depending on where you stay, you may choose to explore the surrounding streets, visit a nearby convenience store, or enjoy a relaxed walk before dinner.
If you are staying in Wulingyuan, the area provides a convenient base for exploring Zhangjiajie National Forest Park over the following two days. Staying in Yongding District may be more convenient for travelers arriving by train or planning to visit Tianmen Mountain.
The remainder of the day is free, allowing you to adjust to the local environment and prepare for the mountain sightseeing ahead. Avoid planning too many activities on arrival day, especially if you arrive late in the afternoon or evening.
Transportation: Private pickup from the confirmed airport or railway station and transfer to your hotel.
Accommodation: Choose from the available hotel options when booking.
Meals: Dinner is not included. All meals are self-arranged unless otherwise confirmed.
Travel tips: Save your hotel's address in Chinese on your phone in case you need to take a taxi independently. If you are unfamiliar with Hunan cuisine, ask about the spice level before ordering, as many local dishes can be quite spicy. Keep your passport and valuables secure throughout the trip.
Enjoy a buffet breakfast at your hotel before beginning a full day of sightseeing in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Located within the wider Wulingyuan scenic area, the park is famous for its extraordinary sandstone pillars, forest-covered mountains, deep valleys, and spectacular viewpoints.
Today focuses on the park's most celebrated mountain scenery, including Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, and Ten-Mile Gallery. The itinerary combines elevated viewpoints with scenic transport and walking routes, allowing you to experience the landscape from several different perspectives.
Ride the Bailong Elevator and Explore Yuanjiajie
One of the day's highlights is the Bailong Elevator, a remarkable outdoor elevator constructed alongside a towering sandstone cliff. It connects the lower valley area with the upper mountain sightseeing zone, reducing the need for a long uphill climb.
Continue to Yuanjiajie, one of Zhangjiajie's most recognizable scenic areas. Its towering sandstone pillars rise dramatically above the surrounding forest, creating a landscape that appears almost unreal. The area is internationally associated with the floating mountain scenery featured in the film Avatar, making it a favorite destination for photographers and first-time visitors.
Walk along the designated sightseeing paths and stop at the viewing platforms to admire the distinctive rock formations. Depending on the weather, the peaks may stand clearly against the sky or appear partially hidden by drifting mist. Both conditions can create striking photographic opportunities.
Allow time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing between viewpoints. During peak travel periods, queues for elevators and shuttle buses may affect the schedule, so the exact sightseeing order may be adjusted to make the day more efficient.
Discover the Panoramic Views of Tianzi Mountain
Continue to Tianzi Mountain, known for its expansive views of sandstone peaks, steep ridges, and forested valleys. From its elevated viewpoints, you can appreciate the remarkable scale of Zhangjiajie's landscape and see how the rock formations extend across the surrounding mountains.
The scenery changes with the seasons and weather. Clear conditions may reveal distant mountain ranges, while clouds and mist can create a dramatic atmosphere around the peaks. Take time to explore the accessible viewing platforms and photograph the landscape from different angles.
The Tianzi Mountain Cableway may form part of the sightseeing route, depending on the confirmed package, operating conditions, and current crowd-management arrangements. Confirm whether the cableway ticket is included before departure.
Enjoy the Natural Scenery of Ten-Mile Gallery
Depending on the day's timing and the confirmed park route, visit Ten-Mile Gallery, a scenic valley known for its unusual rock formations, green hillsides, and peaceful natural surroundings.
The sightseeing path offers a different experience from the high mountain viewpoints of Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain. Here, you can appreciate the surrounding cliffs and rock formations from within the valley, with opportunities to stop for photographs and enjoy the scenery at a more relaxed pace.
Because the park covers a large area, the actual order of attractions may vary according to shuttle-bus arrangements, queues, weather, and available time. Your driver or tour coordinator can help confirm the practical route for the day.
Transportation: Private tour arrangements and scenic-area transport according to the confirmed package. Elevator, cableway, and shuttle-bus inclusions must be verified.
Accommodation: Choose from the available hotel options.
Meals: Hotel buffet breakfast is included as specified. Lunch and dinner are self-arranged.
Travel tips: Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, and a light jacket. Mountain temperatures can be lower than those in the city, and rain may affect visibility. Expect considerable walking and possible queues at popular attractions.
After breakfast, return to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park for another day of natural sightseeing. This time, discover Golden Whip Stream, a scenic walking route that follows a clear stream through a green valley surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs and lush vegetation.
Compared with the elevated viewpoints of Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream offers a closer connection with the landscape. The trail passes through shaded woodland, beside flowing water, and beneath impressive rock formations, creating a peaceful contrast to the busier mountain sightseeing areas.
Take your time along the route to enjoy the fresh air, listen to the stream, and photograph the surrounding scenery. The walk can be adapted to your available time and preferred pace, although the distance covered will depend on the section of trail you choose to explore.
Golden Whip Stream is also a good opportunity to observe the smaller details of Zhangjiajie's natural environment, from the vegetation along the water to the changing shapes of the cliffs above the valley.
Visit Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and the Glass Bridge
Continue to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, a popular attraction known for its dramatic ravines, forested slopes, and the famous Grand Canyon Glass Bridge. The canyon provides a contrasting landscape to the sandstone pillars of the national forest park, with deep valleys and steep rock faces creating a different kind of outdoor adventure.
The Glass Bridge spans the canyon between two rocky cliffs, offering elevated views of the landscape below. Walking across its transparent sections can be an exciting experience, particularly for visitors who enjoy dramatic scenery and panoramic photography.
Take time to enjoy the views and follow the designated pedestrian route. Travelers who are uncomfortable with heights can move at their own pace and focus on the surrounding cliffs and forest rather than looking directly down.
Visitor access, bridge operating hours, and available canyon activities may vary with weather and operational arrangements. Confirm the ticket package and any applicable restrictions before visiting, especially during busy weekends and public holidays.
Enjoy Local Food and Return to Your Hotel
After sightseeing, you may wish to try local Hunan specialties at a restaurant near your hotel. Regional dishes often feature chili peppers, aromatic seasonings, and bold flavors. If you prefer milder food, ask the restaurant to reduce the spice level when ordering.
Return to your hotel after the day's activities and enjoy some free time. Rest well before the next day's journey to Tianmen Mountain, Furong Town, and Fenghuang Ancient Town.
Transportation: Transfers between Golden Whip Stream, the Grand Canyon, and your hotel should follow the confirmed itinerary.
Accommodation: Choose from the available hotel options.
Meals: Meals are self-arranged unless otherwise specified in your booking.
Travel tips: Bring comfortable walking shoes and keep your phone or camera charged. If you plan to walk across the Glass Bridge, follow the site's safety rules and check any restrictions on bags or photography equipment. Allow extra time for transfers between the national forest park and the Grand Canyon.
Begin the day with a visit to Tianmen Mountain, one of Zhangjiajie's most famous landmarks. Known for its steep cliffs, mountain scenery, and extraordinary natural arch, Tianmen Mountain offers a dramatic change of scenery after two days among the sandstone pillars of Wulingyuan.
The mountain is especially famous for Tianmen Cave, a huge natural opening in the rock face that has become a symbol of the region. Its impressive scale and dramatic position high above the surrounding landscape make it one of the area's most recognizable photographic subjects.
Explore the designated scenic areas and viewing platforms according to the operating route available on the day. Tianmen Mountain's sightseeing experience may include mountain walkways and scenic transport, depending on the ticket type and current operational arrangements.
Important notice: Tianmen Mountain's cableway and sightseeing routes may be affected by maintenance. Before booking or traveling, check the latest official announcement regarding access, ticket sales, and available routes. If visiting during the cableway renovation period beginning October 13, 2026, do not assume that the standard cableway route is available.
Travel to Furong Town, the Ancient Town on a Waterfall
After visiting Tianmen Mountain, continue to Furong Town, a historic settlement famous for its traditional architecture and dramatic waterfall scenery. Built along the hillside above a river, the town combines old stone streets, traditional wooden buildings, and views of water cascading through the settlement.
Walk through the historic lanes, explore the traditional streets, and look for viewpoints overlooking the waterfall. The combination of old architecture and flowing water gives Furong Town a distinctive atmosphere, making it a worthwhile stop for travelers interested in local history, photography, and traditional Chinese townscapes.
Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy a relaxed walk through the town, sample local snacks, and take photographs from the designated viewpoints. The town's atmosphere can change considerably between daylight and evening, when illuminated buildings create a different visual experience.
Continue to Fenghuang Ancient Town
After exploring Furong Town, travel onward to Fenghuang Ancient Town, also known as Phoenix Ancient Town. Located beside the Tuojiang River, Fenghuang is celebrated for its riverside wooden houses, stone bridges, narrow lanes, and traditional architecture.
Upon arrival, check in at your selected hotel and enjoy some free time. If time permits, take an evening walk along the river to appreciate the historic buildings and reflections on the water. The illuminated streets create an atmospheric introduction to the town, particularly for travelers interested in photography and traditional architecture.
Choose restaurants carefully and check menu prices before ordering, especially at popular riverside venues. Restaurants with prominent river views may charge more than establishments on the surrounding streets.
Transportation: Transfers between Tianmen Mountain, Furong Town, and Fenghuang Ancient Town should be confirmed with the tour operator. The sequence and duration of each visit depend on the day's schedule and transport arrangements.
Accommodation: Choose from the available hotel options in Fenghuang Ancient Town.
Meals: Meals are self-arranged unless otherwise stated.
Travel tips: Wear comfortable shoes for stone streets and uneven surfaces. Keep personal belongings secure in crowded areas, and confirm your hotel's exact location before arrival, as some historic streets may have limited vehicle access.
Enjoy the morning exploring Fenghuang Ancient Town, one of Hunan's best-known historic destinations. The town's traditional wooden houses, stone-paved lanes, bridges, and riverside scenery provide a glimpse of the region's architectural heritage and long-standing local traditions.
Walk along the Tuojiang River, admire the historic buildings, and explore the quieter lanes away from the busiest tourist streets. Early morning is often a pleasant time for photography, as the town gradually comes to life and the riverside scenery takes on a softer atmosphere.
Visit Shen Congwen's Former Residence
Continue to Shen Congwen's Former Residence, a historic home associated with Shen Congwen, one of modern China's best-known writers. Born in Fenghuang, Shen Congwen drew inspiration from the people, customs, and landscapes of his hometown in many of his literary works.
A visit to the former residence offers an opportunity to learn more about his life, literary career, and connection with the region. The traditional architecture and historical setting also provide additional insight into the cultural background of Fenghuang Ancient Town.
Opening arrangements and admission requirements may change, so check the latest visitor information before your visit.
Explore Wanshou Palace and the Surrounding Area
If time permits, continue to Wanshou Palace, a historic architectural site in Fenghuang associated with the town's commercial and cultural history. The surrounding streets offer further opportunities to explore traditional buildings, local shops, and the everyday atmosphere of the old town.
Enjoy a final walk through the historic district before preparing for departure. If you would like to purchase souvenirs or try local snacks, leave enough time to return to your pickup point without rushing.
Private Drop-off and End of Tour
After completing the visit, arrange your transfer to Fenghuang Ancient Town Railway Station, Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport, Zhangjiajie Railway Station, or Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, according to your confirmed booking.
Please inform your guide or tour coordinator of your preferred departure location and train or flight time in advance. Travel time varies depending on the destination, road conditions, and traffic, so allow sufficient time for check-in and security procedures.
Transportation: Drop-off at the confirmed railway station or airport, subject to the package's transfer terms.
Accommodation: No additional overnight stay is included on the final night.
Meals: Lunch is self-arranged. Other meals are not included unless specified in your booking.
Travel tips: Keep your passport, tickets, and valuables secure. Confirm the pickup time and departure location the evening before leaving Fenghuang, particularly if you are traveling directly to the airport or railway station.
