Zhangjiajie Travel Guide: A Perfect 5-Day Trip for Foreign Visitors

Last week, I traveled to Zhangjiajie from Suzhou with my family. Choosing this season was a great decision—fewer crowds, more fun, and the scenery is absolutely stunning with spring vitality everywhere! However, Zhangjiajie’s scenic spots are scattered. Planning your route in advance is a must, otherwise you’ll end up walking a lot of unnecessary backtracking. If you’re eager to know how we had such a wonderful trip, just keep reading this guide!

Why We Chose a Travel Planner

Before the trip, we did a lot of research. We read many travel guides online, but we still felt confused—there was too much information to sort through. Then we found Xiaoxia, a highly recommended "Gold Medal Travel Planner" that many travelers praised. We contacted her, and she helped us customize the entire Zhangjiajie trip, including the itinerary, transportation, and tickets. The best part? It was a 5-day, 4-night trip, and the cost was only about $1000 per person!

The Amazing On-Scenic-Spot Hotel

One thing we need to highlight is the hotel Xiaoxia arranged for us—it’s located inside the scenic area! This was a total game-changer. Staying there made our trips to the attractions super convenient. The hotel even has a swimming pool, and most importantly, we could watch the beautiful sunrise right from the hotel in the morning. Since we were inside the scenic area, we saved a lot of time on waiting in lines and traveling up and down the mountains. It also helped us cut down on extra expenses and avoid detours.

Key Tips for First-Time Visitors to Zhangjiajie

Scenic Spot Layout: Zhangjiajie itself isn’t a huge area, but its scenic spots are spread out, and the road conditions can be complicated. If you’re a foreign visitor who wants a worry-free and hassle-free trip, doing thorough research beforehand is essential.

Ticket Booking: Tickets are the most important thing when visiting Zhangjiajie. Now, the policy is "No Reservation, No Travel"—more than 80% of China’s 5A-level scenic spots (including Zhangjiajie’s main attractions) require advance booking. During holidays, it’s almost impossible to buy tickets by waiting in line on the spot. So book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment!

Travel Planner Recommendation: For first-time visitors, we strongly suggest finding a travel planner like Xiaoxia. She’ll take care of all the arrangements—you just need to focus on enjoying the trip!

Our Detailed 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Check-In: A private driver picked us up and took us to the hotel. The hotel was clean, comfortable, and quite upscale. We spent the rest of the day resting to get ready for the upcoming adventures.

Day 2: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: We visited Zhangjiajie National Forest Park—one of the most famous spots in the area. We checked in at Golden Whip Stream (a beautiful stream with clear water and lush trees), then went to Yangjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, and Yuanjiajie. The views here were like something out of a fairy tale—tall quartz sandstone peaks rising into the sky.

Day 3: Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park: On the third day, we explored Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park. The highlights included the Glass Plank Road (walking on it feels like floating in the air!), the Guigu Plank Road (a thrilling narrow path on the mountain side), and the 99-Bend Winding Mountain Road (the view of the road from above is incredible).

Day 4: Furong Town & Fenghuang Ancient Town: We started the day by visiting Furong Town—a thousand-year-old ancient town with a beautiful waterfall running through it. In the afternoon, we traveled to Fenghuang Ancient Town, a well-preserved town with traditional Chinese architecture, wooden houses by the river, and a romantic atmosphere at night.

Day 5: Fenghuang Ancient Town, Miao Village & Return: We spent the morning exploring more of Fenghuang Ancient Town, then visited a Western Hunan Miao Village to experience the unique Miao culture. In the afternoon, we headed back from Zhangjiajie.

Trip Highlights You Can’t Miss

1. Affordable Cost: For 5 days, we only spent about $140 per person. Just to give you a reference—the total cost of tickets for these scenic spots alone is over 700 RMB (around $100). My colleague went to Zhangjiajie on his own before and spent more than 2000 RMB (over $280) per person. So this trip was a great deal!

2. Comfortable Transportation: The round-trip tour buses were very comfortable. After a tiring day of sightseeing, we could easily fall asleep on the bus.

3. Delicious Local Food: We got to eat at Xiaoxia’s place. She served us fresh, organic vegetables grown in her own garden and the famous local dish "Tujia Sanxia Guo" (a hearty stew with meat and vegetables).

4. No Long Lines: Unlike group tours where you have to wait in long lines to enter scenic spots or take cable cars, Xiaoxia arranged everything perfectly. She even booked us Line A tickets for Tianmen Mountain—these are like VIP tickets, so we hardly had to wait in line at all. This was such a big relief!

If you’re planning a trip to Zhangjiajie and want to have a smooth, enjoyable, and cost-effective experience, reaching out to a reliable travel planner like Xiaoxia is a smart choice. Zhangjiajie’s beauty is beyond words—you have to see it for yourself!
