From the Sky-High Mountains of Zhangjiajie to the Riverside Lights of Fenghuang

Four travelers from Malaysia, a mix of friends and family, set off to discover the breathtaking landscapes of Zhangjiajie, the charm of Fenghuang Ancient Town, and the vibrant atmosphere of Hunan. From riding the Bailong Elevator high into the mountains to walking across a glass bridge, exploring mysterious caves, and wandering through ancient streets by the river, every day brought something new. With Evelyn helping us put together a thoughtfully planned itinerary, we discovered that the best part of traveling together wasn't just the incredible scenery, but also the laughter, little surprises, and memories we brought home.

I think the funniest part of our Zhangjiajie trip was realizing that all four of us had very different definitions of being afraid of heights. We discovered this on the glass bridge at Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. One of us walked straight onto the transparent floor without a second thought. Another moved forward very slowly, staring at anything except the glass beneath our feet. The rest of us were somewhere in between, laughing, taking photos, and pretending we weren't nervous. Looking down at the enormous canyon beneath us was genuinely breathtaking. And judging by the number of photos we took, we were all pretty proud of ourselves afterward. But that was just one of many moments that made this trip special.

The four of us had traveled from Malaysia, a combination of friends and family looking for a holiday with beautiful scenery, interesting places, and enough time to actually enjoy being together. We had arrived in Changsha at 1:30 in the morning. By the time we reached our airport hotel, everyone was exhausted. Nobody had the energy for much conversation. We just wanted to sleep.

The next morning came much sooner than we would have liked. We boarded the 9:30 AM high-speed train from Changsha to Zhangjiajie West Railway Station. Once we settled into our seats, the excitement finally started to kick in. Outside the windows, the scenery gradually changed, and we found ourselves talking about the mountains we had seen so many times in photographs. Our first major stop was Tianmen Mountain. Nothing quite prepared us for the experience of going up into those mountains. The cable car journey alone offered spectacular views, with winding roads far below and enormous green peaks stretching into the distance. At certain points, the clouds seemed close enough to touch. We followed the mountain's scenic route, stopping repeatedly for photographs. Every time we thought we had found the best viewpoint, another corner revealed something even more impressive.

Tianmen Cave, the enormous natural opening in the mountain, was particularly unforgettable. Standing there and looking up at it made us realize how difficult it was to capture the scale of these places in a photograph. By the time we finished exploring, our camera rolls were already getting out of control. That evening, we stopped by the famous 72 Strange Buildings. We didn't go inside, but the exterior was more than enough to catch our attention. Its unusual architecture looked almost like something from a fantasy movie, especially with the evening lights. After such a full day, checking into Sanhe Tea Space Resort Hotel felt wonderful.

The following morning was the one we had been looking forward to most: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. We started with the Bailong Elevator, which carried us upward along a towering cliff. The speed and the views were both impressive, although none of us could quite decide whether to look outside or watch how quickly we were climbing. Then came Yuanjiajie. This was the Zhangjiajie we had imagined. Huge sandstone pillars rose from deep green valleys, their tops covered with trees. Some stood separately, while others seemed to disappear into the mist. It was easy to understand why these landscapes became associated with the floating mountains in Avatar. We must have taken dozens of photographs of essentially the same mountain from slightly different angles. Nobody complained.

We continued toward Yangjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, where the views somehow became even more dramatic. Sometimes we simply stood quietly, watching the clouds move between the peaks. It was one of those rare places where even the most talkative person in our group ran out of things to say. The next day, we returned to the national forest park, but this time the atmosphere was completely different. Instead of spending most of the day high above the valleys, we walked along Golden Whip Stream, surrounded by lush forest, clear running water, and tall cliffs. After the dramatic mountain scenery of the previous day, the peaceful stream felt like a refreshing change. We took our time walking, chatting, and enjoying the surroundings. There was something especially relaxing about hearing the water flow beside the trail while the mountains towered above us. Huangshizhai was another highlight. From its viewpoints, the sandstone formations seemed to stretch endlessly into the distance. We had already seen so much of Zhangjiajie, yet the scenery still managed to surprise us. That evening, we watched the Charming Xiangxi cultural performance.

After several days of mountains and forests, the colorful costumes, traditional music, and energetic dancing were a wonderful change of pace. We especially enjoyed seeing elements of the local ethnic cultures presented through the performance. Even though we couldn't understand every word, the music and movement made it easy to enjoy.

The fifth day brought another completely different experience. First came the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and its famous glass bridge, where we discovered just how brave, or not so brave, each member of our group really was. Once we got past our initial hesitation, we started enjoying the scenery properly. The canyon was magnificent, and the adventure activities made the visit even more exciting. Later, we explored Huanglong Cave. Walking through its enormous underground chambers felt like entering another world. The illuminated rock formations, towering stalagmites, and unusual shapes made it difficult to believe that nature had created all of this over such an extraordinary length of time.

It was also nice to escape the outdoor heat for a while. After visiting the cave, we continued by road toward Fenghuang Ancient Town. By then, we were getting a little tired from several busy days, but arriving in Fenghuang gave us a second burst of energy. The old buildings beside the Tuojiang River, the reflections on the water, and the warm lights along the riverbanks created a completely different atmosphere from Zhangjiajie. We checked into Chengyun Yuexi Resort Hotel and enjoyed the change of scenery. The following day was dedicated to exploring Fenghuang at a slower pace.

We wandered through the old streets, admired the traditional wooden stilt houses, and stopped whenever something caught our attention. There were little shops selling handmade crafts, local snacks we wanted to try, and countless corners that seemed perfect for photographs. We spent a surprising amount of time simply watching life along the river. Some of our favorite photographs from the entire trip were taken here, not because we were posing in front of a famous attraction, but because the streets, buildings, and river made such a beautiful backdrop. Of course, traveling with friends and family meant there was also plenty of teasing. Whenever someone took too long choosing a souvenir or asked for yet another group photo, the rest of us would pretend to complain. Yet somehow we always ended up joining in.

That afternoon, we boarded the 6:07 PM high-speed train back to Changsha, arriving at around 8:18 PM before heading to our final hotel, Changsha Bingxi Hotel. Sitting on the train, we started scrolling through our photos and realized just how much we had experienced in only a few days. We had gone from mountain peaks to forest streams, from caves to glass bridges, and finally to the peaceful riverside streets of an ancient town. One thing we all agreed on was how pleased we were with the itinerary arranged by our travel consultant, Evelyn. Before the trip, we had wondered whether visiting so many places in such a short time would feel exhausting or rushed. But the arrangement worked really well for us. Spending two days in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was particularly worthwhile. It allowed us to see both the famous mountain viewpoints and the quieter forest trails instead of trying to squeeze everything into a single day. We also appreciated how the trip combined different kinds of experiences. There was adventure at the glass bridge, beautiful natural scenery in the mountains, local culture at the evening performance, and a more relaxed atmosphere in Fenghuang.

Evelyn had clearly put thought into the route, and we were very satisfied with how the journey came together. Looking back, the best part wasn't just the scenery, although the mountains were absolutely incredible. It was sharing all of it with people we love. The nervous laughter on the glass bridge, the endless photo-taking at Yuanjiajie, the quiet moments beside Golden Whip Stream, and the casual conversations while wandering through Fenghuang all became memories we would carry home. We returned to Malaysia with hundreds of photographs, a few extra souvenirs, and many stories to tell. And now, whenever one of us mentions Zhangjiajie, someone inevitably brings up the glass bridge. Usually followed by a very lively debate about who was actually the most scared. We still haven't reached an agreement.
