Five Friends Discover the Timeless Beauty of Northern China
This seven day trip from Jinan to Shanxi with my cousin Sofie covered the clear spring pools of Baotu Spring, the calm waters of Daming Lake, the ancient Buddha carvings in Ten Thousand Buddha Cave, the peaceful Wulongtan Park, the historic Jinci Temple complex, the massive Mengshan Grand Buddha, and the well preserved Pingyao Ancient City. I loved the blend of water scenery and ancient architecture the most.
The idea started when five friends and colleagues began planning a winter escape together. They wanted something different from a typical holiday — a journey filled with history, culture, and places where they could slow down and truly experience China.
After some research, they planned their route with China Comfort Travel and were joined by their local guide, Leo, who shared stories about the places they visited and helped them discover details they might have missed.
Their first stop was Jinan, known as the “City of Springs.” At Baotu Spring, they stood quietly beside the clear blue water, watching the three streams rise from underground. The winter sunlight reflected on the spring, and the old pavilions and willow trees around it created a peaceful scene. One of the friends joked that the spring looked exactly like a traditional Chinese painting.
They continued to Daming Lake, where the winter scenery felt calm and elegant. The lake was quieter than expected, with mist in the distance and bare willow branches hanging over the water. They took a small boat ride, although controlling the boat turned out to be harder than they imagined. After a few unexpected turns, they decided to simply enjoy the view instead.

The group wasn’t only interested in landscapes. Several of them loved history and traditional culture, which was why places like the Shanxi Museum became highlights of the journey. They spent hours exploring ancient bronzes, pottery, and historical artifacts, especially the collections from the Zhou dynasty. One friend who had always been fascinated by ancient coins became so focused on the exhibits that everyone had to remind him it was time to leave.
At Jinci Museum, they found a different kind of beauty. Surrounded by ancient cypress trees, traditional halls, and flowing spring water, the quiet temple complex felt like stepping into another era. It was a place where they didn’t need to rush — they simply walked, observed, and enjoyed the atmosphere.
The journey reached its peak at Pingyao Ancient City. Walking through the old city walls and narrow streets in winter, they felt as if they had traveled hundreds of years back in time. The grey rooftops, traditional courtyards, and quiet alleys created a unique atmosphere. They explored local shops, tried Shanxi specialties, and climbed the ancient city wall to look over the historic town.
There were small challenges along the way — the winter weather was colder than some of them expected, and ordering local food sometimes required Leo’s help. But those moments became part of the fun.
When they returned home, everyone had a favorite memory: the peaceful springs of Jinan, the ancient treasures of Shanxi, or the timeless streets of Pingyao Ancient City. For these five friends, the trip was more than sightseeing — it was a chance to connect with China’s history and create memories together.
