If you are planning a trip to Chengdu during China's 2026 National Day holiday, the biggest mistake is trying to squeeze every famous attraction into seven days.
Chengdu is much more enjoyable when you leave some space between the major sights. Spend one morning with pandas, one afternoon eating local food, another day exploring ancient Shu civilization, and keep your evenings for hotpot, teahouses, night markets and the city's lively streets.

The 2026 National Day holiday runs from October 1 to October 7. This year there is also an additional reason to visit Chengdu: the Sichuan branch of the 2026 National Day Cultural and Tourism Consumption Month and the third season of “Welcome to Sichuan · Shu Is Fun” will take place at Tianfu International Conference Center from September 28 to October 5.
That timing makes the event particularly useful for visitors arriving at the beginning of the holiday. You can combine traditional Chengdu sightseeing during the day with concerts, intangible cultural heritage performances, food markets and large-scale light shows in the evening.
This guide puts together a relaxed seven-day Chengdu itinerary for first-time visitors, families, students, couples and friends. It also explains what should be booked in advance, which days are better for day trips, and how to avoid wasting half your holiday sitting in traffic.
| Day | Main Plan | Recommended Pace |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Chengdu city center + National Day atmosphere + Tianfu International Conference Center | Easy |
| Day 2 | Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding + Dongmen Market / Taikoo Li | Moderate |
| Day 3 | Wuhou Shrine + Jinli Ancient Street + People's Park + Kuanzhai Alley | Easy |
| Day 4 | Sanxingdui Museum day trip | Full day |
| Day 5 | Dujiangyan + Qingcheng Mountain | Full day |
| Day 6 | Chengdu museums, cafés, shopping and local neighborhoods | Relaxed |
| Day 7 | Slow morning + final food stop + departure | Very easy |
There is an important detail about this year's special events.
The main National Day holiday is October 1–7, 2026, but the “Shu Is Fun” cultural tourism consumption event starts earlier, on September 28, and ends on October 5.
Therefore, if you can arrive in Chengdu on September 30 or October 1, you can still experience most of the event. If you arrive on October 6 or 7, the special event itself will already have ended, so the itinerary should focus more heavily on Chengdu's permanent attractions.
Morning — Start Slowly in Central Chengdu
Do not schedule a major day trip on your first morning.
After checking into your hotel, have a traditional Sichuan breakfast and take a relaxed walk through central Chengdu.
If this is your first visit, the area around Tianfu Square, People's Park and Kuanzhai Alley is a good introduction to the city.
Chengdu does not feel like a city that needs to be conquered. A few hours of walking, drinking tea and eating something spicy will tell you more about its character than rushing through six attractions.
Afternoon — Head to Tianfu International Conference Center
From September 28 to October 5, Tianfu International Conference Center will host the Sichuan venue of the 2026 National Day Cultural and Tourism Consumption Month and the third season of “Welcome to Sichuan · Shu Is Fun.”
The event is built around five major activity areas, including stage performances, a Tianfu pop music event, an intangible cultural heritage night, a large-scale photo-check-in program and a water-screen light show around the conference center and Qinhuang Lake.
There are also five main consumption areas featuring tourism products from different parts of Sichuan, local food, intangible cultural heritage products, trendy products and outdoor or water-sports equipment.
The “Shu Is Fun” Nine-Grid Treasure Hunt
One of the more unusual parts of the event is the “Shu Is Fun · Nine-Grid Treasure Hunt”.
Nine NPCs will appear around the venue. Visitors can walk to the nine designated photo points, take photographs of the NPCs or themed scenes and share them on social platforms such as WeChat Moments, Douyin, Xiaohongshu or WeChat Channels. Different numbers of completed check-ins can qualify visitors for different gifts.
For overseas visitors, this is less important as a “must-do attraction” and more interesting as a way to experience how young Chinese travelers interact with tourism events.
Evening — Music, Sichuan Opera and Light Shows
The event changes character after dark.
Daily performances include music, dance, traditional Chinese instruments and Sichuan opera. The pop music program brings singers, bands and DJs to the stage, while the intangible cultural heritage program uses flash performances and themed parades to bring traditional culture closer to visitors.
At night, visitors can also see performances such as iron-flower fireworks, water performers and fire-pot shows, followed by large-scale lighting and water-screen projections around Qinhuang Lake.
This is a particularly good first evening because you can experience a large amount of Sichuan culture without spending the whole day moving between tourist attractions.
7:30–12:00 — Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
No first trip to Chengdu is complete without seeing giant pandas.
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is best visited in the morning, when pandas are generally more active and the temperature is more comfortable.
For the 2026 National Day holiday, the Panda Base has announced that it will continue using online real-name reservations and timed entry. During the March–October schedule, morning admission is 7:30–12:00, afternoon admission is 12:00–17:00, and the park begins clearing visitors at 18:00.
Tickets can be reserved up to 14 days in advance through the official channels or authorized platforms. The official English ticket information also specifically notes that foreign visitors can use Trip.com when online purchasing is difficult because they do not have a Chinese mobile phone number.
For October 1–7, book this attraction before you arrive. Do not assume you can simply wake up at 10 a.m. and buy a ticket at the gate.
How to Spend Your Panda Morning
You do not need to walk every path in the enormous park.
A practical approach is to enter early, see the major panda enclosures, use the sightseeing bus when necessary and leave before the afternoon heat and crowds become tiring.
The official sightseeing bus costs RMB 30 and operates different routes between the South and West Gates, with stops including Panda Villa, the Giant Panda Sun Nursery, Panda Meeting Room, Panda Tower and Giant Panda Star Nursery.
Afternoon — Return to Chengdu and Rest
After the Panda Base, return to your hotel rather than immediately starting another major attraction.
This is especially useful for families with children. A two-hour break can make the evening much more enjoyable.
Evening — Sichuan Hotpot
Your second evening is a good time for a proper Chengdu hotpot.
If you are not used to Sichuan chili and Sichuan pepper, consider ordering a half-and-half hotpot with a spicy broth and a mild broth.
Do not judge Sichuan food only by how spicy it is. The distinctive sensation comes from the combination of chili, Sichuan pepper, fermented bean paste, aromatics and carefully prepared broth.
Morning — Wuhou Shrine
Start the third day with Chengdu Wuhou Shrine, one of the city's most important historical attractions.
The site is closely associated with the Three Kingdoms period and is particularly significant for its connection with Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei.
If you are interested in Chinese history, allow at least two hours instead of treating it as a quick photo stop.
Late Morning — Jinli Ancient Street
After Wuhou Shrine, walk toward Jinli Ancient Street.
Jinli is busy and tourist-oriented, particularly during National Day. That is not necessarily a problem. Think of it as a place to sample snacks, browse souvenirs and experience a highly concentrated version of Sichuan-style street culture rather than as a quiet historical neighborhood.
For better food value, do not buy everything here. Pick one or two snacks and save your main meal for a local restaurant elsewhere.
Afternoon — People's Park
Spend the afternoon at People's Park.
This may sound less exciting than a famous attraction, but it is one of the best places to understand everyday Chengdu.
Find a teahouse, order a cup of tea and watch people play mahjong, chat with friends or simply sit in the shade.
Chengdu's reputation for a relaxed lifestyle becomes much easier to understand when you spend an hour doing absolutely nothing.
Evening — Kuanzhai Alley
Finish the day around Kuanzhai Alley.
The historic lanes contain restaurants, tea houses, shops and traditional-style architecture. It can become crowded during National Day, so do not worry about seeing every alley.
Instead, walk slowly, choose somewhere that looks appealing and have dinner nearby.
If you have seven days in Chengdu, Sanxingdui Museum deserves one of them.
The archaeological site in Guanghan, north of Chengdu, is famous for its extraordinary bronze masks, bronze trees and other artifacts associated with the ancient Shu civilization.
This is one of the places where visiting a museum before or after seeing Chengdu's modern city center makes the trip feel much more complete. You are not simply seeing “old Chinese objects”; you are seeing evidence of a civilization that developed in the Sichuan Basin thousands of years ago.
2026 National Day Sanxingdui Opening Hours
Sanxingdui Museum has announced extended opening hours for the 2026 Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays. During the extended period, the museum will open from 8:30 to 20:00, with extended tickets starting entry at 17:00 and final admission at 18:00.
For the National Day holiday, the museum released the holiday tickets in advance and advises visitors to use its official website, official WeChat account or mini program for real-name reservation and ticket purchase.
This is one of the attractions you should book before your Chengdu trip. National Day crowds can be substantial, and a spontaneous same-day visit is not a sensible strategy.
How to Get to Sanxingdui from Chengdu
The most convenient option for many independent travelers is high-speed or intercity rail to Guanghan, followed by local transportation to the museum.
If traveling with children or a group of four or more, a private car or organized day tour can also make sense because you lose less time transferring between stations.
Do not combine Sanxingdui and Qingcheng Mountain on the same day. Both deserve time, and trying to fit them together creates exactly the rushed itinerary this seven-day plan is designed to avoid.
Day five is for one of Sichuan's classic combinations: Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Qingcheng Mountain.
Morning — Dujiangyan
Start with the ancient Dujiangyan Irrigation System.
The engineering project dates back more than two thousand years and remains one of the most important historical water-management systems in China.
Rather than simply taking photographs of the river, follow the main walking route through the historic irrigation structures and viewpoints.
Afternoon — Qingcheng Mountain
After lunch, continue to Qingcheng Mountain.
The mountain is closely associated with Chinese Taoist culture and is also known for its forested scenery.
If your group includes young children or older travelers, do not try to complete the most physically demanding route just because a travel blogger says it is possible in one afternoon.
Choose a shorter route and enjoy the forest, temples and mountain atmosphere.
Important 2026 Reservation Information
Since February 2026, Qingcheng Mountain–Dujiangyan Scenic Area has used online real-name reservations and timed entry. The announced system divides both attractions into multiple admission periods. Foreign visitors can use a passport or foreigner's residence permit for ticket purchase and enter through the manual inspection channel.
This is particularly important during National Day. Book your tickets before the day of travel rather than assuming you can purchase them when you arrive.
After the day trip, return to Chengdu for dinner. You will probably appreciate a simple bowl of noodles more than another elaborate restaurant reservation.
After several full sightseeing days, Day 6 should deliberately be lighter.
This is where many seven-day itineraries go wrong. They add another mountain, another ancient town and another museum because there is still “one day left.”
Instead, use the day to experience the parts of Chengdu that do not require a ticket.
Morning — Chengdu Museum or a Local Neighborhood
If you enjoy museums, Chengdu Museum is a useful option in the city center.
The museum currently operates a timed visitor system and has different weekday and weekend opening arrangements. Its official visitor guide also notes that peak visiting periods occur during parts of the day, so checking the latest schedule before going is worthwhile.
Alternatively, skip the museum and spend the morning walking through a local neighborhood.
Afternoon — Taikoo Li and IFS
For a modern side of Chengdu, walk around Chengdu IFS and Taikoo Li.
The contrast is interesting after several days of ancient architecture and archaeological sites. You move from traditional Sichuan culture into one of Chengdu's busiest contemporary shopping and lifestyle districts within minutes.
This is also a good place to buy gifts, clothes or snacks before your departure.
Evening — One Last Chengdu Dinner
For your final full evening, choose the food you enjoyed most during the trip.
It could be hotpot, Sichuan skewers, mapo tofu, kung pao chicken, dan dan noodles or a simple bowl of spicy noodles.
There is no reason to make the last dinner complicated.
Keep the final morning flexible.
If your flight or train leaves in the afternoon, have breakfast near your hotel, visit a nearby tea house or take one final walk around the neighborhood.
If you are leaving Chengdu by high-speed train, allow additional time to reach the station during the National Day holiday. Chengdu's major transport hubs can become significantly busier during the holiday period.
If your departure is late at night, you can use the morning for shopping or revisit a favorite food area rather than adding another distant attraction.
If you are staying in Chengdu between October 1 and October 5, I would treat the event as an evening activity rather than building your entire itinerary around it.
The event runs at Tianfu International Conference Center and combines performances, food, cultural products, night activities and light shows. Its five major consumption areas cover tourism products from across Sichuan, Sichuan food, intangible cultural heritage products, trendy goods and tourism/outdoor equipment.
The daily themes are also different:
| Date | Event Theme |
|---|---|
| September 28 | Opening and Welcome |
| September 29 | Cyber Guochao / New Chinese Trend Culture |
| September 30 | Music Carnival |
| October 1 | National Day Celebration |
| October 2 | New-Style Intangible Cultural Heritage |
| October 3 | Family Fun |
| October 4 | Mass Sports |
| October 5 | Bashu Comedy Finale |
The exact performance timetable can change, so check the event's latest official announcement before deciding which evening to attend.
For a Chengdu trip during October 1–7, advance planning matters much more than it does during an ordinary week.
| Attraction | Planning Advice |
|---|---|
| Chengdu Panda Base | Reserve online in advance. The official system allows reservations up to 14 days ahead. |
| Sanxingdui Museum | Reserve in advance through official channels; 2026 National Day tickets were released ahead of the holiday. |
| Qingcheng Mountain | Use real-name online reservation and timed admission. |
| Dujiangyan | Use the official reservation system, particularly during National Day. |
| Chengdu Museum | Check the official reservation system and current opening hours before visiting. |
Many older Chengdu travel guides recommend Jinsha Site Museum as a major archaeological attraction.
Do not blindly copy those itineraries.
As of September 2026, the official Jinsha Site Museum website states that the museum is closed from December 5, 2025 through April 30, 2027. That means it should not be included as a normal sightseeing stop for the October 2026 National Day holiday.
This is exactly why travelers should recheck attraction information before a holiday trip rather than relying on articles published several years ago.
For a first visit, staying close to a metro station is more important than choosing the most famous hotel area.
Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li
This is one of the easiest choices for first-time visitors who want restaurants, shopping and nightlife close to the hotel.
Tianfu Square
A central location with convenient access to several major city attractions and metro connections.
Kuanzhai Alley Area
A good choice if you prefer a more traditional urban atmosphere and want to walk to historic streets and local restaurants.
Near Chengdu East Railway Station
This is practical if your itinerary includes multiple high-speed rail trips, particularly Sanxingdui and other destinations outside central Chengdu.
For a seven-day holiday, I would prioritize metro access, quiet rooms and easy airport or railway connections over a hotel that is simply famous on social media.
The metro should be your default transportation option for central Chengdu.
Traffic around major attractions and shopping districts can become heavy during National Day. Taking a taxi from one popular attraction to another may look faster on a map but can become frustrating once traffic builds up.
For day trips such as Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan and Qingcheng Mountain, high-speed rail, intercity rail or an organized transfer can make more sense.
For short distances inside the old city, walking is often the most enjoyable option.
You do not need a restaurant checklist with 30 dishes. Concentrate on a few representative foods.
| Food | What to Try |
|---|---|
| Sichuan Hotpot | Choose a spicy and mild split pot if you are not used to chili. |
| Mapo Tofu | Soft tofu with minced meat, chili bean paste and Sichuan pepper. |
| Kong Pao Chicken | A familiar Sichuan classic with a sweet, sour and spicy balance. |
| Dan Dan Noodles | A small but intensely flavored noodle dish. |
| Sichuan Skewers | Ingredients cooked or soaked in spicy broth, often eaten casually with friends. |
| Tea | Try a traditional teahouse rather than only modern milk tea shops. |
If you cannot tolerate spicy food, say so when ordering. Sichuan cuisine is more than “hot,” but many dishes use chili and Sichuan pepper as fundamental flavor components.
Yes, but families should avoid treating every day as a competition.
The Panda Base is naturally one of the strongest family attractions. Sanxingdui is also surprisingly interesting for older children because the bronze masks, giant bronze tree and unusual archaeological discoveries look very different from the historical objects found in many traditional museums.
For younger children, keep Day 6 deliberately free. Children often enjoy Chengdu's parks, food streets and open spaces more than another museum.
On the Qingcheng Mountain day, choose the walking route according to the family's physical condition rather than trying to complete the entire mountain.
Chengdu is likely to be busy during the holiday, but the city is large enough that you do not need to spend seven days standing in queues.
The trick is to separate the high-demand attractions from the flexible parts of the trip.
Book the Panda Base and Sanxingdui in advance. Reserve Qingcheng Mountain and Dujiangyan. Visit the city's historic neighborhoods early or late in the day. Use the metro when traffic is heavy. Then leave several hours for food and wandering.
The special “Shu Is Fun” event also gives visitors something different to do during the first five days of the holiday: instead of another conventional tourist attraction, you can watch performances, eat Sichuan food, explore cultural products and see large-scale night-time light shows in one location.
A good seven-day Chengdu itinerary should not feel like seven consecutive tour groups.
Think of it as three different trips combined into one:
Chengdu itself: pandas, teahouses, hotpot, Wuhou Shrine, Jinli, Kuanzhai Alley, People's Park and modern shopping districts.
Ancient Sichuan: Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan and the historical culture surrounding the Sichuan Basin.
Modern Sichuan: music, night markets, intangible cultural heritage, creative products and the 2026 “Shu Is Fun” cultural tourism event.
That combination gives you a much better sense of Chengdu than simply collecting famous attractions.
October 1 — Day 1: Chengdu city center → Tianfu International Conference Center → “Shu Is Fun” event → night light show
October 2 — Day 2: Chengdu Panda Base → hotel rest → Sichuan hotpot
October 3 — Day 3: Wuhou Shrine → Jinli Ancient Street → People's Park → Kuanzhai Alley
October 4 — Day 4: Sanxingdui Museum full-day trip
October 5 — Day 5: Dujiangyan → Qingcheng Mountain → return to Chengdu
October 6 — Day 6: Chengdu Museum or local neighborhood → Taikoo Li → IFS → relaxed dinner
October 7 — Day 7: Slow breakfast → shopping / tea house → departure
Book the Panda Base early. The official system uses real-name reservations and timed admission, with tickets available up to 14 days ahead.
Book Sanxingdui before your trip. The museum expects significant holiday demand and has arranged extended opening hours for October 1–7.
Do not forget that the “Shu Is Fun” event ends on October 5. If it is one of your reasons for visiting, plan it between October 1 and 5.
Do not put Jinsha Site Museum on your October 2026 itinerary. The official museum currently states that it remains closed until April 30, 2027.
Expect crowds. National Day is one of China's busiest travel periods. Start popular attractions early, use public transportation where possible and avoid crossing the entire city several times a day.
Leave some empty space. Chengdu is a city where a cup of tea, a bowl of noodles and an hour sitting in a park can be just as memorable as another famous attraction.
If you follow that rhythm, seven days in Chengdu will feel like a holiday rather than a checklist.
How many days should I spend in Chengdu during National Day?
Seven days is enough for a first visit to Chengdu plus major nearby destinations such as Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan and Qingcheng Mountain. If you prefer a slower trip, five days can also cover the city's main highlights.
What are the best places to visit in Chengdu during China's National Day holiday?
The major choices include the Chengdu Panda Base, Wuhou Shrine, Jinli Ancient Street, Kuanzhai Alley, People's Park, Chengdu Museum, Sanxingdui Museum, Dujiangyan and Qingcheng Mountain. In 2026, the “Shu Is Fun” event at Tianfu International Conference Center is another seasonal option from September 28 to October 5.
Can I visit Sanxingdui from Chengdu in one day?
Yes. Sanxingdui is practical as a full-day trip from Chengdu. During the 2026 National Day holiday, the museum is extending opening hours to 8:30–20:00, with extended tickets entering from 17:00 and final entry at 18:00.
Should I visit the Chengdu Panda Base in the afternoon?
You can, but a morning visit is generally easier to recommend for a first-time visitor. The Panda Base uses morning and afternoon timed-entry tickets, and the official March–October schedule allows morning entry from 7:30 to 12:00.
Is Chengdu crowded during National Day?
Yes. National Day is a major Chinese travel period, so major attractions, railway stations, shopping districts and popular restaurants can be busy. The practical solution is not to avoid Chengdu altogether, but to reserve major attractions early and build more flexible activities into the itinerary.
Is Chengdu good for a family holiday?
Yes. Pandas, parks, museums, food and relatively convenient urban transportation make Chengdu suitable for families. The itinerary should be adjusted by reducing long walking days and leaving rest periods between major attractions.
What should I reserve first for a Chengdu National Day trip?
Start with your hotel and intercity transportation, then reserve the Panda Base and Sanxingdui. Qingcheng Mountain and Dujiangyan also use timed real-name reservations, so they should be arranged before the day of your visit.
Is Jinsha Site Museum open during October 2026?
No. According to the museum's current official website, Jinsha Site Museum is closed from December 5, 2025 to April 30, 2027. Travelers planning a Chengdu trip in October 2026 should not include it in their itinerary.
