Changsha 7-Day Itinerary for China's 2026 National Day Holiday

If you are planning to visit Changsha during China's 2026 National Day holiday, seven days is actually a very good amount of time.

You can see the city's most famous landmarks without rushing from one attraction to another, spend time in the museums that make Changsha different from other Chinese cities, and still leave evenings free for Hunan food, night markets and the city's lively streets.

This 7-day Changsha itinerary for October 2026 is designed around a slower travel style. It works particularly well for first-time visitors, families with children, students and friends traveling together.

The route combines Orange Isle, Yuelu Mountain, Hunan Museum, Changsha Museum, Hunan Geological Museum, Longping Rice Museum, Li Zijian Art Museum, Hunan Botanical Garden and Hunan Art Museum, while leaving enough time for Changsha's food and nightlife.

Most importantly, the itinerary does not treat every museum or attraction as a box that must be checked. Some mornings are intentionally lighter, because National Day is one of the busiest travel periods in China.

China's National Day holiday runs from October 1 to October 7, 2026, and Changsha is one of the cities that can become extremely busy during major holidays.

This is especially important for Orange Isle, Yuelu Mountain and Hunan Museum. During a previous major holiday period, official Hunan tourism data showed that Orange Isle and Yuelu Mountain each received more than 90,000 visitors in a single day, while Hunan Museum and several major attractions reached reservation capacity.

That does not mean you should avoid Changsha during National Day. It simply means that reservation and timing matter.

Changsha launched the “Qu Changsha” tourism service platform in 2026, which integrates online reservation services for major attractions including Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle. It also provides information on hotels, attractions, food and tourism products.

For an international visitor, it is worth checking the official attraction account or the current “Qu Changsha” platform shortly before your visit. Holiday opening hours, reservation rules and entry arrangements can change.

Morning — Orange Isle

Start your first day with Orange Isle, the landmark that appears on almost every first-time Changsha itinerary.

Orange Isle sits in the Xiang River between central Changsha and Yuelu Mountain. It is particularly famous for the enormous statue of young Mao Zedong at the southern end of the island and its connection with his famous poem “Qinyuanchun: Changsha.”

The island stretches for roughly five kilometers, so do not make the mistake of thinking that “free admission” means an easy short walk.

For the 2026 autumn season, official tourism information lists opening hours of 7:00–22:00, with the last entry at 21:00. The attraction is free but requires advance real-name reservation.

The easiest way to arrive is Metro Line 2 to Juzizhou Station. The metro entrance is far more practical during National Day than driving.

If you do not want to walk the entire island, consider the sightseeing train. Current official tourism information lists the full-route ticket at RMB 40 and a single journey at RMB 25.

Best strategy for National Day: reserve your entry in advance and arrive in the morning. You will have more comfortable temperatures, better light for photography and a much easier start to the day.

Lunch — Taiping Street and Pozi Street

After Orange Isle, head back toward the center of Changsha for lunch.

Taiping Street and Pozi Street are convenient places to sample Changsha's famous street food. Try stinky tofu, sugar-oil baba, rice noodles, hot-braised dishes and other local snacks.

However, do not assume that the most famous tourist street automatically means the best value.

These areas can be crowded and some highly visible snack shops charge tourist-area prices. For your first meal, that is fine. Over the following days, look for neighborhood restaurants and university-area food streets as well.

Afternoon — Wuyi Square and Changsha IFS

Spend the afternoon around Wuyi Square and Changsha IFS.

This is the modern side of Changsha: shopping malls, fashion stores, cafés, restaurants and the city's famous KAWS sculpture at the top of IFS.

It is an easy afternoon because there is no need to follow a strict sightseeing route. Browse the shops, take photographs and buy a few souvenirs.

During National Day, avoid arriving at the most popular photo locations around midday if photography is your main goal. Crowds can become considerably heavier.

Evening — Dongguashan

Save your appetite for the evening.

Dongguashan is one of the best places to experience Changsha's late-night food culture. Try grilled sausage, hot-braised dishes, crayfish and other local snacks.

This is also a useful counterbalance to the tourist-heavy streets you visited earlier in the day.

Do not worry about eating a huge dinner at a famous restaurant. Changsha's late-night food culture is often better experienced by ordering several small dishes and sharing them with friends.

Morning — Yuelu Mountain

Day two moves to the western side of the Xiang River.

Yuelu Mountain combines forest scenery with some of Changsha's most important historical sites. It is also one of the city's most popular outdoor attractions, so an early start is worthwhile during National Day.

Current official tourism information lists the scenic area's opening hours as 6:00–22:00. Yuelu Mountain is free to enter, but reservations are required.

There are several entrances. Metro Line 4's Hunan University Station is convenient for the southern side, while Line 2's Yingwanzhen Station provides access toward the eastern side.

If you want a relaxed day, do not try to walk every possible path on the mountain.

Instead, focus on Aiwan Pavilion, Yuelu Academy and the main scenic areas.

Yuelu Academy

Yuelu Academy is one of the most important historical academies in China and gives Yuelu Mountain a very different character from an ordinary urban park.

The academy requires a separate ticket, so remember that free admission to Yuelu Mountain does not mean free admission to every attraction inside the area.

Allow enough time to walk through the academy rather than simply photographing the entrance.

Afternoon — Hunan University

After visiting the mountain and academy, walk toward Hunan University.

The university area is a good place for lunch because it has many inexpensive restaurants and snack shops.

This is one of the better places in Changsha to take a break from tourist-oriented restaurants.

Evening

Return to central Changsha in the evening.

If you still have energy, visit Taiping Street or Wuyi Square after dinner. Otherwise, simply find a local restaurant and have a slow Hunan-style meal.

After two days of sightseeing, there is no benefit in forcing another major attraction into the schedule.

Morning — Hunan Museum

If you visit only one museum in Changsha, make it Hunan Museum.

The museum is particularly famous for the Mawangdui Han Dynasty Tombs collection, which includes exceptionally well-preserved archaeological discoveries from the Western Han period.

The collection includes the famous plain gauze garment, lacquerware, silk manuscripts and objects associated with the tomb of Xin Zhui.

The museum's official visitor information lists Tuesday to Sunday opening from 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00, and Monday closure except statutory holidays. Visitors should bring a passport or other valid identification documents.

For a first visit, allow around three hours.

Do not treat Mawangdui as a quick photo opportunity. The significance of the collection becomes much clearer when you understand that the tombs preserve an unusually detailed picture of life, technology, art and beliefs during the Western Han period.

National Day Reservation Warning

Hunan Museum is free, but free does not mean you can simply walk in during a major holiday.

The museum uses reservation and visitor-management procedures, and official Hunan tourism information has repeatedly advised visitors to make advance reservations.

For October 1–7, check the museum's official website or official WeChat account before finalizing your daily schedule.

Afternoon — Hunan Martyrs' Park

After lunch, you can visit Hunan Martyrs' Park, which is close to Hunan Museum.

This is a useful combination because you do not need to spend another hour crossing the city.

The park is one of central Changsha's major green spaces and combines a memorial area with lakes, trees and walking paths. Current official information lists the park opening from 6:30 to 22:00.

If you are traveling with children, this is also a good place to let them move around after several hours inside a museum.

Morning — Changsha Museum

Day four is deliberately lighter.

Visit Changsha Museum in the morning and spend time learning about the history of the city itself.

The museum is located in the Changsha Binjiang Cultural Park area and is accessible by Metro Line 1 to Beichen Delta Station.

Its regular schedule is typically centered around a 9:00 opening, with last admission in the afternoon and closure on Mondays except statutory holidays. Because National Day can alter normal museum schedules, confirm the exact October schedule before traveling.

Admission is free but requires reservation through the museum's official channels.

Afternoon — Binjiang Cultural Park

After the museum, stay in the area instead of immediately taking the metro somewhere else.

Walk along the riverside and enjoy a slower afternoon.

This is exactly the kind of buffer time that makes a seven-day National Day trip more comfortable.

Late Afternoon — Chaozong Street

Later, head toward Chaozong Street.

The neighborhood combines older Changsha streets with cafés, creative shops and newer lifestyle businesses.

Compared with Taiping Street, it can feel less like a conventional tourist street and more like a place where old and new Changsha overlap.

Spend the afternoon taking photographs, browsing small stores and looking for somewhere interesting to eat.

Morning — Hunan Geological Museum

For the fifth day, move away from the city's most famous historical attractions.

Hunan Geological Museum is a useful choice for families and anyone interested in geology, fossils and the natural history of Hunan.

The museum is located at 49 Shanmu Chong West Road, Tianxin District, with access from Metro Line 1's Shengfu Qingfeng Station.

The regular schedule is Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Monday is normally the closure day, although statutory holidays can change the schedule.

Check the museum's official WeChat account before visiting because National Day opening arrangements may differ from the normal weekly schedule.

Afternoon — Hunan Botanical Garden

Continue to Hunan Botanical Garden in the afternoon.

The garden is located on Zhiwuyuan Road in Yuhua District and can be reached via Metro Line 5 and local transportation.

Admission is free but requires advance reservation.

Unlike a museum, the botanical garden gives you space to slow down. It is particularly useful after several days of indoor exhibitions and city sightseeing.

For families with children, this can be one of the easiest days of the trip because there is less pressure to move from one historical site to another.

Morning — Longping Rice Museum

Start the day at Longping Rice Museum.

The museum is dedicated to rice culture, agricultural science and the legacy of Yuan Longping, the Chinese agricultural scientist closely associated with hybrid rice research.

The museum is located at 2 Zhanggongling Road, Furong District, with a metro station of the same name on Line 6.

Its regular opening schedule is Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30.

One practical difference from several of the museums on this itinerary is that the museum's current visitor information indicates that advance reservation is not required, but visitors need to enter using valid identification.

Because this is a National Day itinerary, still check the museum's latest notice before setting out.

Afternoon — Li Zijian Art Museum

In the afternoon, change the atmosphere completely and visit Li Zijian Art Museum.

The museum is located at 385 Xiaoxiang South Road and can be reached via Metro Line 3 to Yanghu Wetland or Yanghu New Town stations, followed by a short walk or local connection.

The regular schedule is Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30–17:30, with ticket collection ending at 17:00. Monday is normally closed, subject to holiday arrangements.

Check the museum's official WeChat account for current reservation requirements and exhibition information.

Evening — Hunan Cuisine

Return to central Changsha for a proper dinner.

By this point you should have tried street snacks, noodles and hotpot. Now choose a restaurant specializing in Hunan cuisine and order a few classic dishes.

Good dishes to look for include stir-fried pork with chili, chopped chili fish head and stir-fried beef.

If you are not used to spicy food, say “mild” or “no chili” before the dishes arrive.

Morning — Hunan Art Museum

Use your final morning for Hunan Art Museum.

The museum is located at 2 Jinjiang Road, Yuelu District, with access via Metro Line 3 to Central South University Station.

Its regular opening schedule is Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Monday is normally the weekly closure day, with holiday arrangements potentially changing the schedule.

Reservation requirements can depend on the current exhibition and visitor arrangements, so check the official Hunan Art Museum account before visiting.

This is a good final attraction because it does not require the physical effort of another mountain or large outdoor park.

Lunch — One Last Local Meal

For lunch, do not chase another famous restaurant across the city.

Choose something close to your hotel or the railway station route.

If you have not tried them yet, this is a good time for Changsha rice noodles, stinky tofu, sugar-oil baba or local braised dishes.

Afternoon — Free Time and Departure

If your train or flight leaves later in the day, leave the final afternoon open.

You can return to Wuyi Square, buy tea or snacks, walk around a neighborhood you enjoyed earlier, or simply sit down with a cup of tea.

There is no reason to add another major attraction simply because your departure is not until the evening.

Important: The table is intended as a practical planning reference, not a guarantee of holiday opening hours. National Day is a statutory holiday, so museums and scenic areas can publish special opening arrangements. Always check the official notice immediately before your visit.

For an October holiday trip, reservation should be part of your itinerary rather than something you deal with after arriving in Changsha.

The “Qu Changsha” tourism service platform now integrates reservation systems for major attractions including Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle.

For museums, use the individual museum's official website or official WeChat account whenever possible.

For international travelers, this is particularly important because some Chinese booking platforms are designed primarily for users with Chinese mobile numbers or payment methods. If a reservation page does not work with your foreign phone number, look for the attraction's official English page, international ticket channel or ask your hotel for assistance rather than buying an unofficial reservation from a third party.

Use the Metro for the Main Tourist Areas

The metro is the easiest way to move around central Changsha during National Day.

It is especially useful for Orange Isle, Yuelu Mountain, Wuyi Square and several museums.

Traffic can become unpredictable around major tourist areas during holidays, so a journey that looks short on a map can take considerably longer by taxi.

Walk When You Are Already in the Old City

Taiping Street, Pozi Street, Wuyi Square and Chaozong Street are much better experienced on foot.

Do not take a taxi for every 1–2 kilometer journey simply because the weather looks warm.

Use the Metro and Short Taxi/Ride-Hailing Connections Together

For attractions farther from the center, the most efficient approach is often metro plus a short local ride.

This can save both time and money during peak holiday traffic.

For a first visit, staying in the central area is generally the simplest choice.

Wuyi Square

Best for first-time visitors who want restaurants, shopping, nightlife and easy access to Metro Line 1 and Line 2.

Huangxing Road and Taiping Street

Good for younger travelers and food lovers who want to be close to evening activity.

Yuelu District

A quieter option if your priorities are Yuelu Mountain, Hunan University, art museums and the western side of the city.

Near Changsha Railway Station

Practical for travelers arriving or leaving by train, although it is less atmospheric than staying in the central pedestrian areas.

For National Day, being within walking distance of a metro station is more useful than being in the most fashionable hotel area.

Changsha is one of those Chinese cities where food deserves to be part of the itinerary rather than an afterthought.

FoodWhere to Fit It Into the Trip
Changsha Stinky TofuTaiping Street, Pozi Street or local snack streets

If you are traveling with children or visitors who are not used to spicy food, explain your preferred spice level before ordering.

“Mild” is usually a safer request than simply ordering a dish described as “not very spicy.”

Do Not Visit Every Museum in One Day

Changsha has an unusually strong museum scene, but visiting four museums in one day is not a good holiday experience.

This itinerary deliberately spreads them over several days.

Do Not Leave Orange Isle and Yuelu Mountain Reservations Until the Same Morning

These are among Changsha's most popular attractions. Official tourism information confirms that both use reservation arrangements, while recent holiday data shows how quickly popular time slots can fill during peak periods.

Do Not Assume Free Means No Reservation

Several of Changsha's most important attractions are free but still use visitor reservations.

Orange Isle, Yuelu Mountain, Hunan Museum and Hunan Botanical Garden are good examples.

Do Not Rely on Old Opening Hours

This matters particularly during National Day.

A museum that normally closes on Monday may open on a statutory holiday. A scenic area can also change its entry times because of crowd management, weather or special events.

Use the regular schedule as a planning reference, then verify the actual October 2026 holiday schedule before going.

Do Not Spend Seven Days Only in Wuyi Square

Wuyi Square is convenient and lively, but it is only one side of Changsha.

Yuelu Mountain shows the city's natural and academic side. Hunan Museum explains its ancient history. The Geological Museum and Longping Rice Museum introduce science and agriculture, while the art museums show a more contemporary side of the city.

Yes.

Families can adjust the route according to the children's age.

Younger children: spend more time at Orange Isle, Martyrs' Park, the Botanical Garden and Longping Rice Museum, and reduce the number of indoor museum hours.

Older children and teenagers: add more time at Hunan Museum, Changsha Museum and the Geological Museum.

Parents traveling with grandparents: reduce walking on Yuelu Mountain and use sightseeing transportation where available.

The seven-day format works well because you do not need to make every day physically demanding.

Not if you like food, museums and a slower style of travel.

If your only goal is to see the most famous landmarks, two or three full days can cover the basics.

But seven days allows you to see the city from several different perspectives without rushing:

Classic Changsha: Orange Isle, Yuelu Mountain, Yuelu Academy and Wuyi Square.

Historical Changsha: Hunan Museum, Changsha Museum and the Mawangdui collection.

Scientific Changsha: Hunan Geological Museum and Longping Rice Museum.

Contemporary Changsha: Li Zijian Art Museum, Hunan Art Museum, IFS and the city's creative neighborhoods.

Everyday Changsha: tea houses, food streets, university neighborhoods, night markets and local restaurants.

That is why a seven-day trip can work particularly well during National Day: you have enough flexibility to avoid the worst crowds instead of competing for space at the same attraction every morning.

Day 1: Orange Isle → Taiping Street → Pozi Street → Wuyi Square → Changsha IFS → Dongguashan

Day 2: Yuelu Mountain → Aiwan Pavilion → Yuelu Academy → Hunan University → local Hunan dinner

Day 3: Hunan Museum → Mawangdui exhibitions → Hunan Martyrs' Park → relaxed evening

Day 4: Changsha Museum → Binjiang Cultural Park → Chaozong Street → evening food

Day 5: Hunan Geological Museum → lunch → Hunan Botanical Garden → quiet evening

Day 6: Longping Rice Museum → Li Zijian Art Museum → Hunan Art Museum → Hunan cuisine

Day 7: Slow breakfast → shopping → final local meal → train or flight

The best way to travel around Changsha during National Day is not to try to beat the crowds everywhere.

Instead, reserve the attractions that need reservations, start popular outdoor attractions early, group nearby places together and leave several hours every day without a fixed plan.

Orange Isle and Yuelu Mountain are particularly important to reserve ahead of time. Hunan Museum should also be treated as a reservation-first attraction rather than a walk-in museum.

For everything else, keep your schedule flexible.

One of the advantages of spending seven days in Changsha is that you do not have to worry if one attraction is unexpectedly crowded. You can simply move it to another day and go somewhere else.

And that is probably the most useful rule for a National Day trip to Changsha: do less, but enjoy it more.

How many days do you need in Changsha?

Three days is enough for the major highlights, but seven days allows you to explore Changsha's museums, art spaces, parks and food culture at a much slower pace.

Is Orange Isle free?

Yes. Orange Isle is free to enter but requires advance real-name reservation. Current official tourism information lists opening hours of 7:00–22:00, with last entry at 21:00.

Is Yuelu Mountain free?

Yes. Yuelu Mountain is free to enter but requires reservation. Some attractions within or around the scenic area, such as Yuelu Academy, have separate admission arrangements.

Is Hunan Museum free?

The main public museum admission is free, but visitors need to follow the museum's reservation and entry procedures. Its Mawangdui collection is one of the main reasons to visit Changsha.

What is the most important museum to visit in Changsha?

For a first-time visitor interested in Chinese history and archaeology, Hunan Museum is the obvious place to start because of its Mawangdui Han Dynasty collection. If you have more time, Changsha Museum, Hunan Geological Museum and Longping Rice Museum provide very different perspectives on the city.

Do I need to reserve Changsha attractions during National Day?

For several major attractions, yes. Orange Isle, Yuelu Mountain and Hunan Museum use reservation or visitor-management systems. National Day demand can be high, so reservations should be handled before the day of your visit.

What is the best area to stay in Changsha?

For first-time visitors, Wuyi Square, Huangxing Road and the surrounding central area are convenient because of the metro, restaurants and nightlife. If your itinerary focuses heavily on Yuelu Mountain and the western side of the city, Yuelu District can also be practical.

Is Changsha good for a family trip?

Yes. The city has a good mixture of museums, parks, food streets and relatively convenient public transportation. A seven-day itinerary is particularly useful for families because it allows you to alternate between outdoor attractions, museums and rest days.

What should I pack for Changsha in October?

Bring comfortable walking shoes, light layers, sunscreen and a compact rain jacket or umbrella. Autumn weather can change, and a National Day itinerary involving several outdoor attractions is easier when you are prepared for both sun and rain.
