My Beijing Family Trip

I've always been fascinated by Chinese imperial history, so we brought our son along for a trip to Beijing. Before we booked, I was a bit worried that the itinerary would be too packed and exhausting, especially with a child. But the travel consultant we spoke to, Fancy He, was really patient. He listened to our concerns and adjusted the schedule so we had enough rest time between sights. He even sent us a detailed daily plan with estimated walking distances, which put our minds at ease.

Our guide in Beijing was a local guy named Mr. Zhang, probably in his early forties, with a calm and professional manner. He had this way of making history feel alive. Nothing quite prepared me for walking inside the Forbidden City. Mr. Zhang didn't just recite boring facts, he told vivid stories about the emperors and life within those walls. He pointed out the tiny details, like the animal figurines on the roof ridges and what each one symbolized. Even our son, who usually zones out during historical tours, was listening with wide eyes and asking questions. Every courtyard follows such precise, symmetrical planning. The scale of the whole complex is mind blowing; it really hits you how thoughtfully everything was constructed. After wandering the palace grounds, we headed over to the Temple of Heaven and climbed Jingshan Park to get that iconic wide view overlooking all the golden rooftops. Mr. Zhang took a family photo for us up there, making sure the Forbidden City was perfectly framed behind us.

We also spent a day out at Mutianyu Great Wall. Hiking along the stone ramparts was tough work, but seeing the wall snake endlessly over rolling mountains is a memory I won't forget. Mr. Zhang walked at our pace, never rushing us, and pointed out the watchtowers where soldiers used to light signal fires. On our drive back into town, we stopped to check out the Bird's Nest and Water Cube from the outside. I still clearly remember watching the 2008 Olympic opening ceremony live on TV, utterly blown back then. Standing there staring at the Water Cube's bubble membrane design, I was so impressed by how creative the architects were. It suddenly dawned on me that so many years have already passed since those games. Mr. Zhang told us some fun facts about the construction, like how they used recycled water for the ice rink.

Beijing Zoo was our son's favourite spot by far. The giant pandas were endlessly entertaining, rolling around and munching bamboo slowly. He was totally captivated and refused to drag himself away for ages. Mr. Zhang helped us find the best viewing spots and even knew the names of the pandas, which impressed our son a lot. Later we wandered the Summer Palace, lingering beside the lake and shaded covered corridors. Mr. Zhang walked us through the Long Corridor and explained the paintings on the beams, stories from Chinese legends that even we found fascinating.

After all that walking, we were ready for a proper meal. We found a nice local restaurant and ordered several traditional dishes. The braised pork stood out most, perfectly balanced fat and lean meat, tender enough to fall apart the second you bite into it. We also ordered a Peking duck for our son, and to our surprise, he actually loved it. He wrapped the crispy skin and meat in the pancake with some cucumber and sauce, and went back for three more rolls. Mr. Zhang showed him how to do it properly, which made him even more excited. Sadly, he wouldn't touch anything else on the table, so we ended up popping into McDonald's just for him later that evening. I scanned the menu and couldn't believe how many exclusive items they serve here that you can never find back in Europe. Anyway, it was a truly amazing trip, and both Fancy and Mr. Zhang made it so much smoother than we had expected.
