The China Trip That Gave Me Two Completely Different Worlds

Graduation felt like the perfect excuse to finally take that big trip my friends and I had been talking about for ages. We wanted somewhere completely different from Europe, and China ended up being the best decision we could have made. There were four of us, all slightly obsessed with taking photos, so our phones were basically full before the trip was even halfway over. We booked through a travel company, and the consultant who helped us plan everything was a woman named Scarlet Li. She was incredibly responsive and patient, answering our endless questions about food, weather, and what to pack. She even suggested a few photo spots that weren't on the standard itinerary, which we really appreciated.

Having a private driver and an English speaking guide meant we never had to worry about getting around, which made the whole experience feel relaxed from start to finish. Our guide was a young guy named Xiao Chen, probably in his early thirties, with a sharp eye for photography. He always knew exactly where to stand for the best shot, and he never rushed us, even when we spent twenty minutes at the same viewpoint trying to get the perfect angle.

Nothing prepared me for seeing Zhangjiajie National Forest Park with my own eyes. I'd seen hundreds of photos online, but standing there surrounded by those giant stone pillars was something else entirely. It honestly felt like walking into another planet. Every viewpoint somehow looked even better than the last, and every time I thought we had reached the best one, Xiao Chen would smile and say, "Wait until you see the next stop." And he was always right.

The ride on the Bailong Elevator was unforgettable. Looking straight out across the cliffs while the elevator climbed higher and higher was both exciting and slightly terrifying. Once we reached Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, nobody in our group was talking much anymore. We were too busy staring at the views and taking way too many pictures. I don't think I've ever filled up my phone storage so quickly. Xiao Chen took a group photo of us with the pillars behind us, and it ended up being one of our favorite shots of the whole trip.

Tianmen Mountain might actually be my favorite place from the entire trip. The cable car just kept going, and every few minutes the mountains looked even bigger. Walking toward Tianmen Cave, with the enormous opening in the cliff standing right above us, was one of those moments that makes you stop without even realizing it. I don't usually get emotional while traveling, but this place genuinely left me speechless. Xiao Chen told us the story about how the cave was formed and the legends surrounding it, which made the experience even more special.

Xi'an gave the trip a completely different feeling. Instead of dramatic mountains, everything was about history. Seeing the Terracotta Army in person was incredible because every statue really does look different. Later we walked along the ancient Xi'an City Wall, rented bikes for a while, and finished the evening wandering through the lively Muslim Quarter, where the smell of grilled meat and fresh bread seemed to follow us everywhere. I'm normally the person who's willing to try anything once, so naturally I ended up buying way more street food than I needed. Xiao Chen joined us for a bit in the Muslim Quarter and pointed out his favorite snack stalls, which turned out to be the best ones.

By the time we reached Beijing, I thought nothing else could surprise me. I was wrong. Walking through the Forbidden City felt like stepping into another chapter of Chinese history, and Xiao Chen made everything come alive with stories instead of memorized facts. He knew all the little details that you wouldn't find in guidebooks, like which emperor had a pet tiger and where the servants used to sneak out for secret meals. We also visited the Mutianyu Great Wall, and although climbing those steps definitely tested my legs, seeing the wall disappear over the mountains made every step worth it. It was one of those views that simply doesn't feel real until you're standing there yourself.

Looking back now, what I remember most isn't just the famous landmarks. It was laughing with my friends on long drives, comparing hundreds of nearly identical photos every night, and constantly saying, "This might be my favorite place," only to change my mind a few hours later. Every city had its own personality, and somehow they all felt completely different from one another.

China completely exceeded every expectation I had before arriving. I came home tired, with sore legs and far too many photos to organize, but I'd happily do the whole trip again tomorrow.
