Planning to visit the Dunhuang Mogao Caves? Learn how to book Category A tickets 30 days in advance, tour routes, key rules, and insider tips for viewing 1,600-year-old Silk Road murals.

Carved into the sheer sandstone cliffs of the Mingsha Mountains in Northwest China, the Dunhuang Mogao Caves stand as one of the world’s most magnificent repositories of Buddhist art. Spanning over 1,600 years of Silk Road history, this UNESCO World Heritage Site houses 735 hand-carved caves, 45,000 square meters of preserved murals, and over 2,000 vivid painted sculptures.

Here, ancient trade routes brought together cultural influences from Central China, the Western Regions (Xiyu), and Ancient India. The murals tell rich stories of Buddhist folklore, everyday secular life, and celestial Flying Apsaras (Feitian). Thanks to natural mineral pigments, these artworks remain vibrant and breathtaking after more than a millennium.

1. Opening Hours & Essential Ticket Guide
The Mogao Caves enforce a strict daily visitor cap to protect the delicate environment inside the caves. Choosing the right ticket type determines your entire visiting experience.
Operating Hours:
Peak Season (April 1 – November 30): 08:00 – 18:00
Off-Peak Season (December 1 – March 31): 09:00 – 17:00
Ticket Types Comparison:

2. Step-by-Step Visiting Process
The complete tour takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. Following the standard official flow ensures you don't miss any highlight:
Step 1: Arrive at the Digital Exhibition Center
All visitors (including self-drivers) must start here rather than going directly to the caves. Transport: Take a taxi from downtown Dunhuang (~RMB 30) or catch Public Bus No. 12 (~RMB 3).
Step 2: Watch the Immersive Digital Movies
Before heading into the desert, you will watch two short films:
Millennium Mogao – A documentary on the historical origins of the caves.
Digital Buddha Hall – A stunning 8K, 360-degree dome-screen theater film showcasing cave interiors in high definition.
Insider Tip: Select a seat in the middle row toward the back in the dome theater for the best visual perspective.
Step 3: Shuttle Ride & Guided Cave Tour
Board the official shuttle bus for a 15-minute ride to the cave area. Visitors are split into groups of 25–30, each accompanied by an expert guide equipped with custom lighting.
Your 8-cave route always includes flagship landmarks: Cave 96 (housing the massive 35-meter Buddha inside the 9-Story Building) and Caves 16–17 (the famous Library Cave where tens of thousands of ancient manuscripts were discovered).
Step 4: Visit the Exhibition Center & 1:1 Replicas
After the guided tour, cross the river to visit the Dunhuang Exhibition Center for free. Here, you can explore 1:1 scale replica caves—and unlike inside the real caves, photography is permitted here!

3. Strict Rules & Essential Traveler Tips
Strictly NO Photography/Videography: Flashlights and camera sensors cause irreversible fading to ancient pigments. Photography inside caves is strictly forbidden.
No Touching or Loud Noise: Do not touch cave walls or statues, and maintain low speech volumes.
Prohibited Items: Drones and large luggage over 20 inches are banned on-site (use luggage storage at the visitor center).
