Current Opening Status & Best Time to Visit

The Duku Highway is closed for nearly 8 months every year due to severe snowstorms, mudslides, and high-altitude permafrost.

Best Travel Window: July to August offers snow-free mountain passes, lush green alpine meadows, and warm valley temperatures.

Shoulder Season (June & September): Excellent for photography with snow walls along the road, but weather can change rapidly with sudden pass closures.

Essential Driving & Safety Protocol

Vehicle Requirements: Passenger cars can navigate the paved road, but SUVs or crossover vehicles are strongly recommended due to steep slopes and sudden road debris.

Refueling Strategy: Fill your fuel tank completely at Dushanzi, Bayanbulak, or Kuqa. Gas stations along high mountain passes are limited.

Altitude Preparedness: Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous exercise at mountain passes exceeding 3,000 meters.

Emergency Weather Gear: Keep a heavy windproof jacket, extra water, and dry snacks in your vehicle in case of sudden mountain weather delays.
