If you are travelling to China, setting up WeChat Pay before your trip can make everyday payments much easier. Foreign visitors can register WeChat with an overseas mobile number and link eligible international bank cards for payments in mainland China.

However, the setup process can be confusing if you are using WeChat Pay for the first time. You may also run into problems such as a card not being accepted, identity verification requests, payment failures, or a missing Wallet option.

This guide explains how to set up WeChat Pay for foreigners, which international cards are supported, how to make payments, what fees may apply, and what to do when WeChat Pay does not work.

Yes. Foreign visitors can register WeChat using a foreign or Chinese mobile phone number and link eligible bank cards issued outside mainland China. Current Chinese government guidance lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, Discover, and UnionPay among the supported international card networks, although availability can vary by payment product and the card issuer.

You do not normally need a mainland Chinese bank account just to use a supported international card with WeChat Pay.

You also do not necessarily need a Chinese (+86) phone number. A current official Beijing guide says an international phone number can be used as long as it can receive SMS verification codes.

Prepare the following before starting the setup:

What you needWhy it matters
WeChat appWeChat Pay is accessed through the WeChat app
International mobile numberUsed for registration and SMS verification
Eligible international bank cardUsed as the payment method
Passport or other accepted IDMay be required for identity verification
SMS accessNeeded for verification codes
Stable internet connectionRequired to complete setup and make mobile payments

Make sure the name and personal information you enter match your identification and bank-card information. If your card issuer blocks the verification request, WeChat Pay may not be able to complete the card-linking process.

Current government guidance says foreign visitors can link cards from major international payment networks, including:

However, card-network support does not guarantee that every individual card will work. The card issuer may need to approve the verification request, and the payment product may have its own supported-card rules, limits, or fees. Always check the current information shown in WeChat Pay when adding your card.

Download or Update WeChat

Install the latest version of WeChat and register or sign in with your mobile number.

You can use an international phone number if it can receive the required SMS verification code.

Open the WeChat Pay Wallet

After logging in, go to Me → Services → Wallet.

Depending on your account, app version, or location, the menu may look slightly different. If you cannot find WeChat Pay, official guidance also lists alternative activation paths through Me → Settings → General → Tools, followed by the WeChat Pay activation option.

Add Your International Bank Card

Inside Wallet, select Add a Card and follow the instructions on the screen.

You may be asked to provide your card information and personal details. If passport verification is required, WeChat Pay can ask you to upload a copy or photo of your passport.

Complete Verification

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete any required identity or card verification.

If your card cannot be linked, do not immediately assume that WeChat Pay does not support your card. The problem may come from the card issuer's verification system, the information entered, or the specific card type.

Once your international card is linked, there are two common QR-code payment methods.

Scan the Merchant's QR Code

Open WeChat and use the scan function to scan the merchant's payment QR code. Follow the payment instructions displayed on the screen.

Show Your Payment QR Code

In supported situations, open your payment code and let the merchant scan it.

QR-code payments are widely used in restaurants, shops, hotels, supermarkets, transportation, and other everyday services in China.

No. Linking an international bank card gives foreign visitors access to many everyday payment scenarios, but it does not make every WeChat payment function available.

For example, official guidance notes that some features associated with domestic WeChat payment accounts, such as money transfers and red packets, are not supported when using international cards.

For ordinary tourist spending, the most important use is paying merchants for goods and services.

Fees can depend on the transaction amount, payment product, card, and current promotional rules.

Current Chinese guidance states that international-card transactions of up to RMB 200 are not charged the additional 3% service fee. For transactions above RMB 200, a 3% service fee may apply.

There is also a current promotional policy for first-time international-card users. Beijing's March 2026 guidance says eligible users who link an international bank card for the first time can receive a waiver of the 3% fee on daily transactions under RMB 1,000 for 60 consecutive days from their first transaction, subject to the stated promotion conditions. The same guidance says transactions under RMB 200 are fee-free for international-card users.

Because promotions and payment rules can change, check the fee shown in WeChat Pay before confirming a large transaction.

Why Can't I Add My International Bank Card?

The most common possibilities include an unsupported card, incorrect card information, a verification problem, or a rejection by the issuing bank.

First, check that your card belongs to a supported network and that the card information exactly matches what you entered. If everything is correct but the card still cannot be linked, contact your bank to make sure it allows the verification or online transaction request. Official Chinese guidance specifically notes that some overseas banks may reject card-linking requests because of their own system or authorization requirements.

Why Is WeChat Asking for My Passport?

This can happen when WeChat Pay requires additional identity verification.

Foreign visitors can use a passport for identity verification, and the app may ask for a photo or copy of the passport information page.

Make sure the passport information is clear and that the personal information entered in WeChat matches your passport.

Why Is My Payment Declined?

A failed payment does not necessarily mean your WeChat Pay account is unavailable.

Check the following:

Confirm that your linked card has sufficient available credit or funds.

Check whether the merchant accepts the payment method you are trying to use.

Make sure the card has not been blocked by your bank's fraud or security system.

Check whether the transaction exceeds the applicable limit or falls outside the supported payment scenario.

Try the payment again after checking the information shown in WeChat Pay.

If the problem continues, contact WeChat Pay customer service and your card issuer. Payment limits, supported card brands, and fees can vary by payment product and may change over time.

Why Can't I Find Wallet or WeChat Pay?

The exact menu can vary depending on your account and app version.

Start with Me → Services → Wallet. If that option is unavailable, check the activation path under Me → Settings → General → Tools. Official local government guides provide both routes for activating WeChat Pay.

If the feature still does not appear, update WeChat to the latest available version and check your account settings.

Why Did My Bank Reject the WeChat Pay Verification?

Some banks may decline the authorization request even when the card itself is normally usable overseas.

Contact your card issuer and ask whether international online verification or the relevant payment authorization request has been blocked. You can also contact WeChat Pay support if the bank confirms that it is not rejecting the transaction.

Can I Use WeChat Pay Without a Chinese Phone Number?

Yes. A current official Beijing guide says foreigners can use an international phone number as long as it can receive SMS verification codes.

You therefore do not necessarily need to buy a Chinese SIM card just to register WeChat Pay.

If you cannot get WeChat Pay working before your trip, do not rely on it as your only payment method.

China currently provides several payment options for overseas visitors, including international bank cards, mobile payment platforms, RMB cash, and certain overseas e-wallets.

For a practical backup, consider preparing:

Alipay: Link a supported international card before travelling.

International bank card: Keep at least one physical Visa, Mastercard, or other supported card with you.

RMB cash: Carry some cash for situations where mobile payment is unavailable.

Using two payment methods is generally more practical than relying on a single app throughout your trip.

You do not necessarily have to choose between them. Many international visitors set up both WeChat Pay and Alipay so they have an alternative payment method during their trip.

Set It Up Before You Fly

Complete registration, add your international bank card, and finish any identity verification while you still have reliable access to your home mobile network and bank.

Bring the Physical Card

Even if WeChat Pay works correctly, carry the physical bank card linked to your account. It gives you another payment option if the app, card verification, or mobile connection stops working.

Keep Your Phone Number Active

Make sure you can receive SMS messages on the phone number associated with your account. This is particularly important if you need to log in again or complete another verification step.

Keep a Second Payment Option

Alipay, a physical international bank card, and some RMB cash can provide useful backups if a WeChat Pay transaction fails.

Can foreigners use WeChat Pay in China?

Yes. Foreign visitors can register WeChat with an international mobile number and link eligible overseas bank cards for supported payment transactions in mainland China.

Do I need a Chinese bank account for WeChat Pay?

No. A Chinese bank account is not required simply to link an eligible international bank card. However, some WeChat Pay functions may require a different account or payment setup.

Can I use a foreign Visa or Mastercard with WeChat Pay?

Yes. Visa and Mastercard are among the international card networks currently supported. Other supported networks include American Express, JCB, Diners Club, Discover, and UnionPay, subject to the current payment product and card-issuer requirements.

Can I use WeChat Pay with a US bank card?

A US-issued card can work if it belongs to a supported card network and passes the required verification. However, acceptance of an individual card is not guaranteed, so it is best to link the card before your trip and keep a backup payment method.

Can I use WeChat Pay without a Chinese phone number?

Yes. An international phone number can be used if it can receive the required SMS verification codes.

Does WeChat Pay charge foreign users a fee?

A 3% service fee may apply to eligible international-card transactions above RMB 200, while transactions at or below RMB 200 are currently exempt from that additional fee. Temporary promotions may provide additional fee waivers, so check the current terms shown in WeChat Pay before payment.

Can foreigners send money to other WeChat users?

International cards linked to WeChat Pay are primarily intended for supported merchant payments. Certain domestic features, including money transfers and red packets, are not supported with international cards.

What should I do if WeChat Pay does not work?

Check your card details, card status, identity verification, internet connection, merchant payment method, and any applicable transaction limits. If the problem continues, contact WeChat Pay support and your card issuer. Keep Alipay, a physical international bank card, or RMB cash as a backup.

For most foreign visitors, the easiest way to prepare WeChat Pay is to register with your existing international phone number, link an eligible international bank card, complete any requested verification, and test the account before leaving home.

WeChat Pay can cover many everyday purchases in China, but it should not be your only payment method. Keep a backup card or another mobile payment option available, especially for your first few days in China.
